POR FESR 14/20 - Action I.1b.1.1 Research Results Industrialization (IR2)
PROJECT
The goal of the project is to develop and test two complementar prodution systems: The first one deals with assembling 3D electronic boards, whose manufacturing is enabled by CEMAS ELETTRA Srl and their symultaneous laser polymer welding technology; the second involves quality-control, enabled by SPEA SpA's flying probe technology. In both stages, in-line production is being tested as well. Furthermore, the (OR) DISAT - Politecnico di Torino played an important part in this project as a known actor in applied research and implementation in the industry.
This collaboration is considered crucial in the interest of the electronics manufacturer as well as CEMAS's: such a pro-active adoption plays as an incentive towards further research, development and marketing of the technology all across the industry.
For this reason, as part of the project, CEMAS developed and manufactured a new, medium-sized model for the laser multifiber series - the MF240 welding machine - and showcased it at the 2022 K fair in Dusseldorf, the most important event of the plastics and rubbers industry in the world. The laser multifiber technology provides a symultaneous, highly precise and customizable welding profile, ideal for delicate and minute applications, and the MF240 machine can feature up to 24 laser sources. Each laser source emits a powerful ray which is conveyed, through an optic fiber system, into the first (transparent) polymer component, then fused into the second (absorbent) one.
During the research, CEMAS found out that plenty of the knowledge already matured in in the automotive sector for years could be really useful for addressing the challenges of the developing electronic frontier - from product scalability to addictive manufacturing. Finally, those same automotive manufacturers who already trusted CEMAS in the past had no trouble adopting these new welding technology themselves as part of their production process.
